What is SEO and how does it work?

SEO, short for Search Engine Optimization, is the set of techniques and strategies used to improve a website’s visibility in the organic results of search engines, mainly Google. The goal is to ensure that the pages of a website appear in the top positions when a user searches for terms related to the site’s content or services, without having to pay for advertising. It is a broad and constantly evolving field, because search engine algorithms continuously change and what worked well a few years ago may now be irrelevant or even counterproductive. Doing SEO effectively requires a combined understanding of technical, content and strategic aspects that are rarely all found in the same person.
SEO is traditionally divided into two main areas: on-page SEO and off-page SEO. The first concerns everything that happens within the website itself: keyword selection, the structure of titles and texts, page loading speed, image optimization, URL structure and the overall quality of the content. The second instead concerns external factors, first and foremost backlinks, meaning the links that other websites point toward your own: the more authoritative sites link to a page, the more Google considers it trustworthy and tends to rank it higher. Added to these two dimensions is technical SEO, which deals with aspects such as how Google crawlers scan the site, redirect management, sitemap structure and mobile compatibility.
Investing in SEO is one of the digital marketing strategies with the best cost-benefit ratio in the long term, because unlike paid advertising, organic traffic does not stop arriving the moment payments stop. Results, however, are not immediate: ranking well on Google requires months of constant work on content, technical optimization and domain authority, and there are no guaranteed shortcuts. In recent years, artificial intelligence has further changed the rules of the game, with Google integrating AI-generated answers directly into the search results page, in some cases reducing traffic to websites even when they are well ranked. SEO nevertheless remains a fundamental skill for any online project that wants to grow sustainably and reach its audience without relying exclusively on advertising.
