mario nanni is one of those authors that no binder can contain. Designer of light, founder of Viabizzuno, winner of the Compasso d'Oro 2024, but also poet, photographer, writer, philosopher of design. His work is made of lamps and of verses, of lighting projects and of invented words, of exhibitions and of thoughts written all in lowercase. To preserve a heritage like this does not mean putting it in order inside a folder, it means finding a way for it to continue to live, to let itself be questioned, to generate new ideas. It is from here that archiviouniversale is born.
archiviouniversale is not an archive in the traditional sense of the term. It is an artificial intelligence that guards hundreds of documents, images, poems, projects, lessons and photographs of marionanni and makes them available to those who want to explore them. The system acts at once as archivist and as scholar, because it does not limit itself to preserving the materials but reads them, puts them in relation and answers the questions of those who consult the work. Each document is catalogued by type, poem, description of a work, project presentation, lesson, photograph, with its own specific attributes, so that the artificial intelligence always knows what it has in front of it.
The heart of the experience is the chat. The user writes in natural language, as they would speak with an expert on marionanni's work, and the system searches among all the materials for those most pertinent to the request, retrieves them and builds the answer on that basis. One can ask to show the image associated with a poem, to find the pdf of a book, to know where a certain work is located, or to export ordered lists of the archive's contents. Everything starts from the real documents, because the value of an archive like this lies in the fidelity to the source.
The most fascinating part of the project, however, is another. By analysing marionanni's writings, the system learns his language: the constant lowercase, the joined words that become a single concept like lalucedellepaginebianche or progettarevocedelverboamare, the rhythm and the sensibility with which he speaks of light and of matter. On this basis archiviouniversale can generate texts in the style of the author, describe a work as he would describe it, sketch out a poem, build the outline of a university lesson or propose the idea of a new lighting project starting from his philosophy. The archive stops being a warehouse and becomes a creative tool.
From the technical point of view the project does not resemble any website. It is an application built to measure, hosted on cloud infrastructure, with a dedicated database, processes of cataloguing and indexing of the content and a semantic search system that retrieves the documents by meaning and not only by keyword. On top of this structure work several artificial intelligence models, chosen and calibrated document by document to obtain answers ever more faithful to the author. It is the type of project in which goNet's work meets the frontier of applied artificial intelligence.
archiviouniversale is a living project, designed to grow together with the work it guards, because every new document uploaded makes it richer and every cycle of refinement makes it more precise. After having given marionanni his website, goNet now builds the tool that keeps his entire creative universe in motion, an archive that does not freeze the artist but continues, in its own way, to think him.
