Yuri Ancarani is an Italian artist and filmmaker whose works circulate among the most important museums, galleries and festivals in the world: from the Venice Biennale to the MoMA in New York, from Palazzo Grassi to the Fondazione Prada, from the Chengdu Biennale to the Bangkok Kunsthalle. His work crosses cinema, contemporary art and documentary, organised into single works and thematic series such as The Malady of Iron, The Roots of Violence and Memories for Moderns. Designing his website meant confronting a career of rare complexity and making a precise choice: what kind of digital space does an artist of his calibre need?
The answer is WordPress with a customised portfolio structure, which allows the works to be archived and presented chronologically and by series, with the possibility of updating the archive autonomously every time a new work is completed or a new event is added. For an artist with continuous output and an always active international presence, this management flexibility is not a technical detail, it is a necessary condition for the site to remain always faithful to the real moment of the career.
The design is deliberately almost invisible, and this is not a simplification: it is a radical design choice. Yuri Ancarani's works have a visual and narrative force that does not need to be amplified by an elaborate interface. A site that is too present would risk competing with the content instead of serving it. The homepage is an essential list of titles and years, built to let the works speak without graphic superstructures that distract attention from them. Every visual element of the site exists to serve the works, not itself.
The navigation revolves around the titles of the works, each with its own dedicated page: Il Popolo delle Donne, Atlantide, San Siro, Il Capo, Piattaforma Luna, The Challenge and many others, presented with the information necessary for an industry professional but with a narrative quality that makes them interesting even for a non-specialist audience. The reference galleries, Zero... in Milan and Isabella Bortolozzi in Berlin, are integrated into the site as part of the artist's professional ecosystem.
The Calendar gathers a dense list of screenings, exhibitions, masterclasses and public appearances all over the world, updated in real time and consultable by anyone who wants to follow the artist's movements. The Reserved Area is accessible on accreditation and guarantees curators, journalists and distributors selective access to press materials and professional documentation, without its presence interfering with the experience of the general visitor. The result is a digital archive that reflects the quality and the essentiality of the work it contains.
